learning about india

so in one term of studying about india - from democracy to caste to federalism to economics to bureaucracy to foreign relations, this is all i've learnt:

1. India is in (to put it politely) quite a complicated situation

2. Something needs to be done

3. Some people think they know what should be done

4. But nobody knows how to do it.

all their problems seem enmeshed in one huge vicious cycle and nobody seems able to break it.

but my india prof, who was all serious and earnest the first few weeks, has loosened up and is refreshingly funny, cynically-funny, mildly-sarcastically funny and funny funny.

i've forgotten most of his funny one-liners but here are three random examples:

"no your exam is not open book. i want your answers to be internalised... and to come to you like happy dreams~"
(HE's dreaming. i've never found anything i've studied come to me like happy dreams. more like nightmares from it not coming to me)

"i'll definitely be available for consultations on your term paper in the next two weeks but please don't come to ask me what your answer should be, i'll just tell you to go away but you're welcome to come and hear me tell you that."

on india's economy, as i recollect it: "india's economic stats are abysmal but if you get your fix from poor stats then india would be like ecstasy".

this and bejeweled.
staying at home really doesn't work.
