Bar Hopping~

in the name of work.

latest news: my project's going to revolve around our bar. so naturally, step 1 was to go out and do a bit of market research to try and understand the local market. having approached my GM while he was in a good mood, i easily got my bar crawl approved and fully reimbursable... and hey i was really working ok!

hence, last night we embarked on a 5hr bar crawl with a very strange ensemble...

i was originally supposed to go with my A.F&B mgr but he wasn't able to get away in the end. so our bar crawl was led by a lao wai (!!!!! the irony), with me playing the part of an eager-beaver tourist (cover for taking photos) and armed with our gameplan/ secret map drawn out by aforementioned lao wai tour guide, and with my local colleague and his friend trailing behind totally clueless about where we were going and totally ignorant of these bars' existence! i vaguely feel like maybe i was corrupting them.............


First stop was a cosy little Brazilian BBQ & bar tucked away in a pretty obscure/ unnoticeable location! Had a very country-western feel to it and surprisingly, made their own beer! This was my personal fave and i'm already staking it out as a birthday celebration spot!




2nd was a very very local bar. we stuck our head in and left. i sense your gasp of relief.

3rd was a very loud and noisy 'Jazz' bar which had awful entertainment but seemed to be fairly popular...
4th was Revolutionary - a rougher looking place with lots of character. liked their revolution themed decor. made me think of beijing. and shanghai's propaganda museum. it was really packed and apparently very popular with foreigners. twas a bit too crowded and messy for my liking tho.

5th - German Restaurant and Bar. the classiest place of the night and the fact that they're surviving reassures me that there is still hope for the bar scene here after all...
Lots of imported wine and German beer.
so THAT's what a beer tower is called in chinese! i was trying to explain it to my colleague. fancy-schmancy... i wld have just called it a 塔
Rounded off the night with good ol' street-side BBQ and headed home for what was supposed to be a good night's sleep but i dunno why on earth i woke up at 7!!!
